eviction

I cosigned a lease with a friend with the undrstanding that they would let me out of the lease in a month. Well they would not let me out of the lease and the guy i cosigned for is no longer paying the rent. I was contaced by the leasing company and told that they were going to be evicted. The court date is this comming monday. I did have him sign a paper saying that he was soley resposnable for payining any rent or fees due on the lease. Is there anything i can do in court monday that will prevent them from comming after me?

Being a co-signer means you are accepting financial responsiblity should the other person not pay. You should not have signed it if you did not want to be responsible. So yes they can go after you. Your recourse is to sue your friend for the money you get sued for.

I hope on the lease it says that you were only going to be there for a month and that is when your responsibility ended. If not, then you are in trouble. Good Luck!
