My ex-boyfriend and I took a trip together back in August. I paid for the accommodations with a check in the amount of $1850, which he said he would reimburse me for his half. We recently broke up and I still have not received the money ($925). We were also sharing a cell phone plan, which he owes me $440 for. I have called him, written him a letter, and even had my father call him for the money. He won't respond. I want to take him to small claims court to recoup my loss. He owes me a total of about $1300. Also, it was a very dramatic break-up that resulted in me emailing his new girlfriend about how controlling and manipulative he is and how he takes advantage of vulnerable women. I know I should not have done that, but my emotions got the best of me. At this point, I just want to get my money and be done with it. I am a single mother of two small children and need that money to pay bills! How should I get the money out of him? Should I take him to small claims court? I have evidence we were on the trip and the canceled check, just nothing in writing....I also have evidence that he was on my cell phone plan. I do have a few of his belongings, and he has some of mine that I would like to have back.....I just can't get a response!

Take him to small claims and present all the evidence you have to enhance your case. List on your filing that you would like not only to get paid for the money he owes you but also, you want to get your belongings back. The judge's order will mandate that if you are awarded the suit.

Take him to small claims court. You'll need to prove what you spent on the trip and cell plan, so get your receipts together. You'll need to show that half the expenses were incurred by/for him. And you'll need to show that these were not gifts - that generally you were responsible for your own costs during the relationship, kept separate bank accounts, etc.
