I had an ex-gf live with me from June 2011 until January 2013 when we broke up. She ocasionally stayed at her parent's place during the course of living there but from August of 2011 to September 2012 she was staying over 7 nights a week, during the other months it was 4 nights a week. She kept "over 10" suitcases worth of clothes, and personal items in my closets which stayed in the apartment from June 2011 until February of 2013. She was not on the lease or had keys, we never had an agreement to pay anything. She never paid any rent or utilities but had a job the entire time and saved up money as downpayment on a place. You can imagine I feel taken advantage of, based on her staying over so often and keeping her things there without paying anything.

Do I have a strong claim for unpaid rent/utilities? Would I be able to file a claim against her as a beneficiary of the use of the apartment?

The problem is you allowed her to stay there without paying anything. You can "try" a claim in small claims court. You can sue for up to $5,000 in SCC in Va.

You might open a can of worms you wont like. Was your landlord aware of your GF staying there? If not this might make him/her aware and would be breach of lease which could get you evicted. In addition I do not se how you would prevail in such a suit as you had no agreement on her staying there and you were dating at time

No one can tell you if your claim is a winner or a loser.

You can file a lawsuit, and see what happens.

I can tell you that courts don't care what unmarried people do regarding finances.

I won't repeat what others have said, because I suppose you know your part in letting her freeload off of you.
