I signed a joint and several tenancy with a roommate last year for a 2 bed flat.
After a few months I had to leave my job and told my roommate I would have to use the break clause (at 6 months) cause I wouldn't be able to pay rent without a job obviously! He refused to agree to the break clause and told me I would just have to find the money to pay rent. So I decided to try and find a replacement for myself (all OK with letting agency). Found loads of people but he kept saying he wasn't going to be around to meet them etc...being really unhelpful. One time I bought someone who wanted the room to see it and my roommate at the time was so rude the new guy didn't want to room after all! I told the letting agency my roommate was being really difficult and I had to leave and they served notice on us and told us we had to be out in 1 month (fine by me as I was leaving already - shows they thought my roommate was being difficult on purpose)
I then left and did not pay the final month rent as I had already left my job and felt that it was my roommate's fault that no replcement had been found and I felt held hostage by him to carry on paying rent forever! No he is taking me to court for 1/2 the rent as he had to pay a month of full rent. What should I do? I can't afford to pay him...will I be forced to pay him?!

You'll need to talk to a UK solicitor.

You can also see if the CAB can help you.
