My son has just lost his job and has enough money to pay the car insurance but does not have enough to pay for his new tags - can you please tell me what the penalty would be if he would be stopped for expired tags even though license and insurance are current? He needs to drive to job interviews so he can get the money to pay for tags.

If you are within a month of the expired tags they often will not stop you. Sometimes even if they do they will write you a warning. If they do write him a ticket and he gets his tags within a couple days of the ticket they will usually drop the ticket. If he has to pay it, $52 dollars here in GA. I don't know where you are.

Personally, I don't stop for expired registration unless it is 6 months or more. That is the point as which the vehicle becomes towable, and therefor searchable... so far as CA law anyway.
So long as he doesn't let it got on for too long he shouldn't have to worry about being stopped, however the late payment will likely result in increased registration fees with the DMV.
Anyway- the penalty itself is relatively minor, however getting a ticket would require paying the past due registration fees. This is a common "fix it" ticket. Go get registered and produce the paperwork, then they will wave the magic wand and make the citation go away.
