hi in 1999 I was charged with shoplifting concealment of good. in court i was given probation in which my father presided over. in essence, i was turned over to my father. i was 21 in my sophmore year of college. it was during thanksgiving holiday and the prob. officer let my father give me community service. I've never had any problems with this until recently. I had a job in the bag and was noy selected in the end because of my background. I currently live in north florida.

this happened in
cumberland county, nc
case type: misdemeanor
offense date: 11-24-99
offense: shoplifting concealment goods
disposition date : 12-6-99
disposition: guilty
sentence: jail 10 days, probation 1 yr, fine/costs

i was not jailed, paid no fines(pretty sure that i did not), no probation
i did community service hours at my dad's instruction

my 2 questions are
1. can i get an expungement or seal, which would be better
2. can i do this on my own without hiring an attorney

You can expunge or seal the record per NC state law. Expunging varies from state to state but most would give you an option to either seal or expunge. Expunging is best if you qualify. It makes the record go away for 95% practical purposes………..Sealing is the next best option when you don't qualify for expunction. Sealing would also prevent employers from seeing any details of your record. You can check this link for some NC rules on expunctions…….
http://www.criminalattorney.com/states/nc_expungement.htm …………If it is not helpful, then get a NC criminal lawyer number online and get free guidance on what to do next. There are other sites which have lawyers to help do this such as www.recordremoval.com. They are good because even after you get the court expunction order, they try to remove it from private online data bases which are import if expunction is to mean anything.
