My sister-in-law was shopping at Dollar General after she got off work when a police officer approached her and asked her if she would mind stepping to the back of the store. She willingly followed the officer and once she got to the back of the store he asked if she would mind dumping her pocketbook out. She asked him what was going on and he told her the store clerk had observed her on the makeup ailse putting merchandise in her purse. She then proceeded to dump her purse out for the officer. He then looked at the clerk and said "she has not taken anything"! The officer thanked her for being cooperative and let her go. The more she thought about it, the madder she got. She decided to stop at the Dollar General once she arrived in our own home town. She wanted to find out who the manager was at the accusing location. Upon entering she asked to see the manager. He came up and listened to her story about what had happened. He told her he would call the store to find out what was going on. When he hung the phone up he just looked at her and asked her to leave his store. He told her the girl who had accused her at the other location said they had her on video for shoplifting and he didn't want her back in his store. After the police had already informed them she was innocent, the accusing store was still claiming she was a shoplifter and was now telling the manager of this particular location. He also told his cashiers because when her husband went back to see what was going on, the cashier told him that he needed to leave things alone because they had her on tape. She then went to the police station to talk to the officer who had detained her so she could get a copy of the police report. He told her he would view the tape and she could come back on Monday and pick up the police report then. Upon viewing the tape, the officer found nothing to indicate that she would be shoplifting. He did note in his police report that he found nothing in her purse or on film. She is really upset now because not one person in the entire company has even offered their apology. Can she sue for having her name slandered after the store knew she had not stolen anything? Is this store clerk liable for anything? She falsely accused her with no reason to believe that she was shoplifting and then tried to say they had her on video shoplifting when in fact they did not.
