I had a repo guy call me yesterday morning and identify himself as an inspector with the courts in order to obtain my current address.
He later showed up at my house in an unmarked black pickup truck with two of his friends and tried to take my car. He didn't have any paperwork at all.
I called the courts this morning and there is nothing in there records for anything that needs to be served to me.
This guy falsly identified himself to obtain information on a private credit matter. Isn't that illegal? What can I do about it?

Thanks.
Nick

Yes, using false or misleading representations is illegal under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Report them to the FTC. Nothing might come of it, but at least they'd be on record as having violated the Act. You could also file a lawsuit to collect damages. Your damages are probably pretty minimal and it might not be worth the trouble. You could also write them a letter (naturally maintaining a courteous and respectful tone).

Thank you for the advice. I filed a complaint with the FTC and also reported this to my bank. They seemed to be extremely bothered by the actions of the contracted party. I don't think they will continue to use them in the future.

Regards,
Nick
