My adult son recently moved out of my home (where he was living rent free) and left behind a lot of belongings and a HUGE mess. Legally do I have to store his belongings and if so, how long?

Google your state's policy on abandoned property. Most likely you'll be required to post a notice in a paper after a certain amount of time has passed. If he doesn't respond, you normally can sell the property or give to charity. In the meantime, you're obligated to store it. You'd also be wise to inventory it.
