I recently found out my father passed on Memorial Day. He lived in Fl and I live in Pa. My parents were never married and I didn't have a relationship with my father except for a few phone calls and a few visits in life, my efforts mainly. His former wife passed in 2004 and she was his commonwealth wife which was recognized in the state of Pa.
I was not notified of his passing and learn of it from a stranger. I was not even mentioned in his obituary. In the obituary it was stated he retired in 2006 at which time all property was sold. That really upset me his current girlfriend of 3 yrs would put something like that in something which should of been more of a caring time not a fact time.
I am the only child to the best of my knowledge and recently learned his deceased wife would of been considered my stepmother and she never had any children. I'm confused on what I should do.
I know he doesn't have the house anymore and I'm not a greety person but the thought of someone who has been with him only 3 yrs disturbs me may be receiving all if any of his assets. She may not know I exist because he was a very private person. His remaining sisters know of me and of course my family on my mothers side knows he is my father.
Do I try to find out if there is anything and if so how would I do it? I already applied for a copy of my birth certificate, which I am not sure he is on but I figured I would find out soon. He was cremated which if needed I will have a harder time to prove my relationship. No one denies I'm his daughter who really knows him or my mother(who has passed as well).
I feel like everyone is trying to keep me a secret and it raises my curiosity even more as to why?
I was wondering if there is any way to find out if he has any assets without going through attorneys because I cannot afford one. Are their attorneys who will take your case without a deposit/money in agreement for a percentage of any assets regardless if there is anything?
