i was just wondering if there was anything i could do. i was fired after two months of work because i was sick for one day and couldn't come in. my boss said i was required to bring in a doctors note in or i couldn't return to work. i don't have insurance and i expressed this to my manager but he told me that he couldn't do anything because this was coming from the boss. he told me to go to the emergency room and i didnt have the money. so he told me to bring my key in. so can i do anything?

thanks for the pointless and unhelpful sarcastic reply...I've already returned my key, uniform, and picked up my last check. i meant is that even legal that a fast food restaurant can require a doctors note when they dont provide insurance and know that you cant afford a physician.

File for unemployment and look for another job Jacks gal is correct in your case the at-will presumption applies to your termination. The at-will presumption is used by mediocre employer that you don't want to work for in the first place restrauntors being the bottom of the heap of mediocrity I am not the least bit surprised.

However if you have enough qualifying hours you can collect unemployment since the termination is so arbitrary you would win on appeal most likely.

Let me save you the trouble of goggling "at-will" employment, the doctrine called "employment at will" , is an archaic doctrine, a relic of 19th century anti-labor laws, gives employers the unfettered right to fire workers at any time, for any reason, whether grave or frivolous. Indeed, one can be fired for no reason at all.

Its been slowly watered down since the rise of Unions and some favorable state court decisions. Your good company's have pretty much scrapped the whole thing in favor of a progressive discipline policy but there are the remaining clowns that still cling to it.
