Fired by text message!

My sixteen year old daughter recently got a job at a local resturant. She found out that a friend of her works there as well....after the inital interview her friend texted her telling her she got the job. I thought that was strange!

She worked about 4 nights with them, and she brought home a schedule of her hours for the following week. She got a phone call from the owner the day she was supposed to go into work saying that they had to redo the schedule because two girls quit. She stated she would call her back. She never did....so my daughter called in to find out when to come into work and the owner was to busy to talk.

Later about the time she was originally scheduled to go to work her friend that works there texted her and said that she was not on the schedule at all. I made her call down there and talk to the owner to find out what was going on...when she did the same friend answered the phone and said the owner could not talk once again.

A little bit later she got a text saying that she was not the right fit for the job. I made her call again and see what was going on, again the owner would not talk on the phone, but said to tell her that she never filled out a w 4 form and it would take a few weeks after that to pay her. I don't think this is right....I think they are taking advantage of a kid thinking she don't know any better.

I have mind to go down there myself and do some mommy damage talking to these people....I have never heard of such unprofessional practices! I also don't want it to look like her mom coming to the rescue either, but I think they are hoping she will just go away so they don't have to pay her....rumor is they are losing business and probably are doing this to save face.

If they don't pay her by all means go down there and demand she be paid. What happened here is your kid got fired, I don't know why. She learned a lesson though. That is restaurant operators are abominable managers in general: uniformed,unsophisticated,and often brutish in their treatment of employees. The pay stinks benefits are minimal ,and hiring firing is arbitrary.

Management training if there is any,is rudimentary decision making is autocratic. I have seen plenty of poorly run business,but no where is the misery,and anxiety of the workers more intense then a badly run restaurant.

It's an industry screaming Unionize me,and often someone does,unfortunately not enough.

However if they don't pay her you have to take care of it either through persuasion or a court action. As a parent you represent your minor child in all legal affairs. Not paying your kid rises to the level of a legal affair, so if she is not paid you really have no choice.
