About 2-1/2 years ago I was fired from my job at a retail store for stealing. There were no cameras or anything, but another guy who was getting fired for something else told on me.

I signed a written statement saying what I took and how much I took (about $3200 worth of merchandise) but other than what I told them they had no real proof. Part of what I signed had an agreement for me to pay back the dollar amount for what I took. I only made 1 $100 payment and then moved without giving them my new address and never heard anything again until last month.

I got a letter in the mail from a law office saying I owed $3200 in 20 days or they might seek further action, which may require me to appear in court and pay even more money for the store's attorney fees and such.

I'm broke now though because I've been going to school full time wihtout a job and living off of student loans.

What should I do?

Actually, I just found the paper I signed and it is for $2,330, not $3,200 like it says in the letter. Does it cost a law firm $900 to send out a letter?

They want more than what I took. What should I do?

You are extremely lucky

You could've been taken to criminal court.

Next time, don't take anything.

If you do, admit nothing and contact a lawyer.
