So i was fired today from my job for supposedly doing false returns and taking the money for myself. They said that they are going to do a head to toe investigation and will press charges. If they press charges will someone come to my house and arrest me or will they just send a letter to appear in court?

That's hard to say could go either way. I suspect they will want to question you again and possibly get a confession. I am a retail theft consultant and deal with this all the time. Answer no question sign no documents without a Lawyer

If you're arrested, simply remain calm, do as they ask. But, don't admit to anything or make any statements. Simply say, I wish to have a lawyer. I also will use my right to remain silent. Then only give your name, address, date of birth, and other harmless details.

If you check with a couple bonding agencies, they can tell you how much your bond will be, assuming you don't want to sit in jail. That way you can start getting your bail money together.

In Cali these days, if your record isn't too dirty, you'll likely get released on your signature (like a traffic citation).

Even if they convict you, you won't likely see prison, unless the money amount is LARGE.

Thank you, now that I need to find a new job when they do a background check will my termination be listed on the background check?

Background checks are for criminal convictions in general. Right now there is no criminal case much less conviction. They could put your name in one of the retail theft databases but this only harms you if you seek employment with another subscriber

I might mention your former employer can (not that they will) tell a prospective employer why you were terminated if they call former employer for reference & other purposes. They can tell the prospective employer anything that is true or that they honestly believe to be true.

Background checks deal with criminal history, education, driving records and so on, if by that you mean the kind that can be run by putting your SSN through a search. Such checks do not show employment history or how employment ended.

However, a future employer CAN ask for your past employment history, CAN call the employer and confirm how employment ended, and CAN fire you/refuse to hire you if they discovered that you have lied about it. Please note that a lie of omission is also a lie, and that gaps in employment history are HUGE red flags, so if you're thinking about leaving this employer off any subsequent applications, don't. It's FAR better for a prospective employee to hear the story from you than to be blindsided by having it come up later.
