I have worked for a major company for 15 years. Written up twice in all that time for attendance. Our Union contract was up and when it came time to voting on the new contract, a really bad one was voted in. Gave the Company a lot more reasons to fire employees and bring in temporary workers. Over the last 5 months they have fired 3 people who worked there for more than 30 years, 2 people who have worked there for 20-30 years, 2 people who worked 15-20 years (myself included) and 4 people who worked for less than 10 years. All of these people have since been replaced with temporary employees. As for my case, I was fired for theft. Here is why....We have a cafe at the jobsite. They lease the area from my company. I take my own breakfast and own lunch to work. I toast my bread in the cafe and butter it, and at lunch time, I take small condiment container and put a touch of mayo and mustard in it for my sandwich. I have done this for years. I do not pay for those items. Well, with this new contract in effect, it gave them the opportunity to fire me for it. Now if they would have just said I need to pay 5 cents for the butter and 10 cents for the mayo and mustard, I would have.....but they didn't. They fired me for theft. I made $17.40 an hour, and because of my seniroity, I had all the overtime I wanted. I had already worked 193 hours overtime by October. My point is, I would not have purposfully taken the condiments if I thought for a moment it would cost me my job. Because I admited to them that I do indeed butter my bread, the union could not help me. In the eyes of the Company, I admited my theft. Now I am worried about finding another job. How do I get another job with theft on my record. Even if it was for such a rediculous amount?

It is very rare I am on someones side on this site, but there is a first time for everyhitng.

Fight this. Go to the labor board, or even hire a lawyer. If they can't put a price on the items or if they never charged for them before and now are using it as an excuse to get rid of you you might have a case.

Tell them you want an amout of the items you supposedly "stole" and you want it in writing, and seriously, look for a lawyer. Its one thing to fire you just to fire you, but to add on the shame of "theft" something that oculd follow you around for life isn't right.

Store detective this is out of our area of expertise. Where I agree this is awful. They may not need to place dollar value since no charges were filed. Perhaps you could add to the discussion on sister site that poster has joined and posted on.
