Recently I was fired from my job for virus infection. Since that day they have made personal deductions to my final pay check for expenses caused by the infection. I have also been sent multiple invoices for expenses incurred for the last two months to continue fixing the problem. First off I did not sign a contract, was not given a handbook for do's and dont's, and needed password approval to download anything on the computer. The software downloaded was going to be used to benefit the entire engineering department.
I filed a wage claim with the state to determine the deductions made and it is being reviewed. However I am still receiving new invoices and reminders for new bills they have received from their computer tech. I do not believe that I am responsible for the invoices but if I am how long can they keep charging my for new problems to their network?
Could this also be something I could take them to court over for harrassment? Please advise on the possibilities.

Lewis, I am not an attorney yet this is my opinion regarding your situation:

No, they cannot deduct arbitrary expenses from your final paycheck unless you approve of it. You've done the right thing to file a grievance about this.

The company would need to show that you had malicious intent or gross negligence in causing the computer virus. Was there a company policy regarding the use of the Internet, etc.? Were you made aware of it? Did you sign any papers during your hiring process that perhaps mentioned the company policies? (If you were installing pirated software on the Company's computer, then their case would be stronger).

I'd suggest forcing the hand of the Company by asking them on what legal grounds they believe you are responsible for the damages caused by the virus. Make this request in writing tot eh Company President, with copy to your former supervisor.

Are we talking about a computer virus, or a medical condition? It makes a difference.
