A friend of mine was just fired from his job for stealing. He claims that he did not. The store he was working at hired an investigator who allegedly caught him on tape stealing at least $100. My friend claims that he did not steal anything. The store fired him and will not show him the alleged tape.
What can my friend do?

Unfortunately, there's not much he can do. It is legal for them to fire him for suspicion of theft, even if they are mistaken.

He might want to run his situation by an employment law attorney. No laws have violated; he has no cause to sue. But it's not impossible that if his attorney asks, they might give him access to the tape.

He should apply for unemployment immediately.

Additional Info on unjust firing

He was also forced to sign a statement admitting that he stole or they were going to call the police. Because of his fear, and not thinking rationally, he signed. Does this change anything?

Yeah-- He signed a document stating he stole-- He should have refused and had them call the cops and look at the alleged tape

Nothing has changed. You were fired. It maybe unfair but does not fall into illegal. Your saying he did not do it but you cant be certain. My husband doe sthis type and in general the security people or Loss Prevention and this case professional investigator made accusation. This is very very rarely done without solid evidence a crime was commited
