Hi people, I have some questions, and I need your help. Lately I was charged first offense DUI, and was sent for a court hearing. I didn't have a lawyer so they gave me one. Now, I have a week till I could talk to my private lawyer assigned to me. So, I don't pretty much know what my sentences are. Most likely, community service and a fine.

My questions are:
-Am I required to pay the lawyer assigned by the court? What if I'm not financially capable?

-I am currently a green card holder for 3-4 years now, 1 year to go then I would be able to apply for my citizenship. Will this affect my immigration status? I have no prior record, this is my first.

The court may order you to pay the public defender from my understanding. I also don't know the specific facts and am guessing you are not indigent. Regarding your offense, my understanding is that a first time DUI is not considered a crime of moral turpitude but this is unclear. Regarding repeat offenses you'd have a problem for sure. My understanding is that some plead down the offense to something lesser, e.g. "negligent driving" and this should take care of concerns for the most part. I wish you best of luck and ALWAYS make sure you are fine to drive and completely free of any chance of intoxication. Think about not just yourself but the safety of others. :)
