Today I got caught shoplifting at Claires in the mall, and the police were called in. It was about 18 dollars worth of merchandise. I was given a slip that held the court date, which I signed. This is my first time shoplifting and I assure you, it will be my last time.

I was wondering if there is any way that this will not go onto my juvenile record because I will not be 18 by the time I will want to submit forms for college applications and scholarships. I am also not clear if this will affect it or not, although I'm pretty sure it will. Also will paying a fine just end this whole ordeal? I'm not sure because one of the police officers told me that I would not have to go to court if I paid a fine, but I'm not sure if it will erase this record or if it will settle anything. Input is much appreciated. Thank you.

There are at least two fines ot pay. One Civil the other crimnal. If you want this off your record ask your Attorney about Diversion as plea option

You not "offered" a fine. If charged criminally you will get "two" fines. One is court fines the other is unrelated to court fines that is the Civil Demand notice. Any Civil action does not become part of your criminal history
