Flea Infestation

Hello,

I moved into a duplex three months ago and have since had a massive flea infestation. The problem is coming from our backyard which is connected to 10 other rentals. This has made the duplex uninhabitable because I have bites all over me, and the other two tenants do as well. However, I'm not sure that it is legally uninhabitable or what kinds of steps I need to take. I have a dog and it would make sense that the dog brought the fleas inside where they hatched eggs etc. I mentioned it to my landlord and he expects me to spray the backyard and bug bomb the duplex (which is connected to another tenant). Before getting into it with the landlord I wanted to see what kinds of rights, if any, I have to fight this. I do not want to pay for the yards extermination nor do I feel responsible for the infestation. Our dog and cat are at a serious health risk now. We are all at our breaking point and have started coming to the conclusion of staying at a hotel or moving all together. Please help if you have any advice.

Thanks,
Alex

The alleged source of the infestation can't be pin pointed other than to intuitively acknowledge your pets would be vectors.

Make your life easy, hire an exterminator to kill the fleas.

Otherwise, you'll be stuck in flea squalor until your lease expires.

Make your life easier. Purchase a bag of Sevin dust. Sprinkle it through the house. Leave it sit for 24 hours then vacuum it and the dead fleas up. Sevin dust won't hurt pets or children, but will take out the fleas.

Bonus idea: Get your neighbors to pitch in to treat the common areas.

So you're saying this isn't the landlords responsibility?

Thanks for comment.

It doesn't matter what I say, I'm not being bitten by fleas.

If I were suffering such a fate, I'd pay any price to not have my blood sucked by some filthy critter.

Fighting with the landlord only prolongs your agony.

As far as your landlord being responsible, I'm sure that was the position she or he took.

That means you go to court, try to convince a judge otherwise, meanwhile the evil critters continue feasting on your blood.
