I work for the Department of Aging and Disability and I also have a three year autistic son. I applied for FMLA to be allowed to take him to/from therapy and HR denied the physician's request because they said autism is not a serious health condition. My supervisor is now retaliating against me and looking for reasons to write me up. I had never been counseled or wrote up until I filed the complaint, however the same day that I filed the complaint I was counseled that same afternoon. Someone has tampered with things in my office and threw my personal and work related items in the dumpster. This is the same agency who qualified my son as a Medically Dependent Child and for Texas Medicaid. I have contacted the DOL to file a complaint. I need someone who will fight for me and my son's right. This program and therapy is important for him because he was non-verbal when he first started the program. He went from nonverbal to verbal in two months. I look forward to your advice.

Have you contacted autism support groups? There are many that you can search for online. Try contacting them and see what they have to say. I'm sure they've counseled many other concerned parents.

FMLA is another piece of "feel good" legislation. It has helped a few people. It has harmed or disappointed many more than it has helped.
