forged check

My ex-roommate moved out and he left behind a check that he had stolen from my check book. It was made out to him for 550 dollars. He forged my signature on the front and even endorsed it on the back. However since he forgot it and did not cash it I dont know whether I could still take legal action against him. Any advice would surely help

Turn the check over to the cops.

The problem is, proving it was him that wrote it. I would call the police, they will come out and possibly take fingerprints of it and possible talk to the roommate if they can locate him. I imagine he faces at least an attempted forgery, theft, etc..
