My husband and I volunteer with a dog rescue organization. Last night, our current foster dog attacked my husband and one of my dogs while out on a walk. Is the rescue organization responsible for the vet bills to my dog? (the dog that attacked was not hurt) The rescue claims they are not responsible as we signed a "volunteer agreement" that exempts them from liability. They cannot or will not show me a copy of this voulnteer agreement they claim we signed. The volunteer agreement on their website does not address the issue of liability in a dog attack. We also had to pay annual dues of $20.00 for "insurance purposes." We just want the rescue organization to cover our vet bill. They are insured. Are they responsible for our vet bill since they own the dog? Even if we di sign a volunteer agreement that exempts them from liablity, is this a legal contract? Thank you for your time and help.

Normally I'd say that a volunteer is a volunteer. But if you paid $20 annual dues which includes insurance I'd follow up. Are you sure they are insured? Are you saying that the organization owns the dog and you are volunteering to keep it? Perhaps try once more and send a letter that you'll be going to court if they don't do the right thing. Does this seem prudent?
