Garnishment of wages

Can a loan company garnish my wages? If my employer receives a letter of garnishment from a lawyer on a loan department behalf. And I filed a exemption of garnishment and request for hearing. Do they have to start holding immediately or can they wait until they receive something from the courts on specifics?

I'm not sure but believe that filing an exemption would prevent the garnishment. Delay tactics without a good defense are usually not a great idea, FYI. Good luck.
