What are the grounds to get an annulment instead of a divorce? I was married less than a year and terribly harrassed by his mother in person and with drunken phone messages. Is there some way I can get out of this thing without getting divorced?

Divorce

So I am trying to get a divorce now, just filled out the Racine, WI papers for joint divorce filing and he is getting a lawyer. Should I get a lawyer? I really can't afford one and he has nothing I want but I am afraid he is trying to screw me over, he is getting ugly about the whole thing. What is the smartest way for me to go? Also do I have to file taxes with him for 2008? We are still married at this point but hopefully his lawyer will help him file papers soon. I just don't know what to do and I have limited resources.

If he has a lawyer, and he is trying to screw you over, you should get a lawyer. He may have nothing you want, but you need to be careful he doesn't wind up with something of yours that you could have protected.

I would suggest to your husband the possibility of a collaborative law divorce or other less litigous options. These can help keep expenses down and preserve some semblance of civility between the parties. If he's already lawyered up, he (or his lawyer) may be resistant, but it's worth a shot.

http://www.collabdivorce.com/ will give you more information and help you find a collaborative law specialist in your area.
