Getting out of lease when the lease hasn't actually started

Hello,

I have been living in this apartment since March 07'. The leasing office put out a letter in December 07' to see if anyone wanted to sign a lease agreement for their early bird special (lower rates) before Jan. 1st. If you didn't, you would be subject to higher rates than the early bird special, so we did sign. It is now Feb. 12th, and my wife and I are getting a divorce, so I we have to split up. I can't afford the apartment by myself, and did not foresee the divorce happening when I signed the lease agreement. The new lease agreement doesn't actually start until March. 08'. I tried to put in a 60 day notice today (feb. 12th), but the property manager said I would be breaking my future lease if I did decide to leave. I told her I didn't agree because I haven't actually started the new lease (it doesn't start until March 1st 08'). I'm just trying to find out if I'm actually legally binding to this contract that I haven't started yet. The lease actually states where it shows your term agreement "LEASE TERM. The initial term of the Lease Contract begins on the 1st day of March, etc., and ends on March 1st 09'".

Wondering if anyone can help me out? Thanks.

Sorry - you and your wife BOTH have an obligation to rent the property through the renewal period. You should decide which one wants to live there with a new roommate for the length of the renewal period OR discuss options for moving and paying mgmt to re-rent unit while you continue to pay rent.
