I was at work the other night and a man came in and started chatting in the bar. He was telling me about a set of circumstances and randomly gave me his car key which I gave back only to be given it again. He told me he was a disqualified driver had been caught again, left his car on the side of the road and was going to jail for a serious motor vehicle related offence. He said the vehicle had caused him nothing but trouble and said he would like me to have it, he was over it. I took a bit of convincing as it was rather nuts to me to be gifted a vehicle and is roughly worth $3,000. On leaving I said I couldn't have his car but he kept insisting so even though I wasn't sure if it was maybe a prank, I got a wee slip of paper and wrote that he was giving me the car, he read the couple of lines and signed, with not a very legible signature but a signature. He still gave me the keys and told me where the car was parked about 2km away. I had a witness who was impartial to both of us witness the whole thing then drove by where he said out of pure curiosity. The car was there, the key opened it and it started up. I wasn't at all sure what to do but after a lot of thought decided that these things do happen to people on occassion and I must just be extremely lucky to have been in the right place at the right time! I took the car home, did a double check it had no money owing, not stolen, etc the next afternoon for peace of mind. Two days later I was still apprehensive so checked again and now the owner has reported it as stolen. Now I guess I'm in a pickle because I'm not sure what to do or whether I would be cosidered in the wrong for being perhaps a little naive and trusting. This person was a stranger to me but seemed extremely genuine and gave legitimate reasons for wanting rid of the vehicle. He had had a couple of drinks but was not drunk and knew exactly what he was doing at the time. What are my rights regarding this, I don't want any trouble and don't know what's going on. Many Thanks.
