Give lawyer card with registration?

My son is 22 and drives a nice car. He gets pulled over all the time when he is out later than midnight. He did get a disorderly conduct because of getting smart with a police officer who asked how he could afford the car he has and why someone like him would want to drive a cadillac. So I know my son is no angel. His lawyer gave him his card and told him the next time he is pulled over to hand the police officer this card along with his registration and to be QUIET. He has been pulled over three times and each time has given the officers this card. They then have asked who the ---- he thinks he is. One officer said he is getting bad legal advice pulling that card out. Is my son just asking for trouble by giving this card to them when he is pulled over? It is a miranda rights card along with his lawyers name. If they are profiling him by the type of car he drives does this not make him look like he is hiding something? He was pulled over last night and they had him detained for an hour and a half after doing a sobriety test. They then gave him a ticket for stopping on the white line at a stop sign. I guess you are supposed to stop before it ( I did not even know this). On the ticket is says arrested but it is marked out. Were they waiting for him to do something wrong?

It's generally pointless to give the card to the cops on a traffic stop. I'd hand it back to him and ask again for his license, registration, and insurance. Provided he has given the officers the required documents, he only has to answer questions pertaining to his identity (spelling of name, address on license current, etc.).

However, common decency generally requires SOME kind of response when a person asks a question - even a cop. Simply replying, "Sorry, officer, but my attorney has advised me not to answer any questions about what I have done without him present," would be better than stony silence. If he is seen as rude, that can almost guarantee a citation when he might otherwise NOT have received one.

Regardless of whether he is being "profiled", it does make him look as if he has something to hide ... it is an unusual way to act and thus it will stand out.

A sobriety test does NOT take an hour and a half. Either he greatly exaggerated the detention time or something else was going on.

No one can say what the cops were doing as none of us were there. Your state is not mentioned in your post, so even applicable state laws cannot be discerned.

Your son is an adult. He is obviously making some decisions which have the attention of the police. I hope he is out on his own and paying his way by himself. You admit he is "no angel", so be careful - someone who is admittedly no angel can easily draw you down with whatever he's involved in.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, he is out on his own. He purchased his first home in May. He has a job and works a lot of overtime for what he has. Of course driving around in a cadillac with rims in Kentucky does not help but it is a car he has always wanted.
I will foward the information to him. I did not think it was very good advice to just hand the card to the police along with the registration and insurance papers but wanted to make sure. I am sure his lawyer was just trying to help him but as you said it makes him look like he has something to hide. Thanks again.
