I recently got caught stealing at a local drugstore in California.
I just turned 18 years old, I am still in highschool, and this is my first offense.

I got caught with $10 worth of stuff. The store wanted to charge me with stealing something else that they said was $40, but I put back the item on a shelf with the case half ripped and only walked out with the $10 item.
I got charged with petty theft 488 and a misdemeanor.
I got a court date and the police officer told me I needed to get booked, and I went to the police department but the lady said I needed to call for an appointment or something.
I can't afford an attorney.

1) When I go to court, should I plead Not Guilty and request for a Public Defender?
2) I'm a legal adult but I live with my parents.. does this disqualify me for a public defender? My family can't afford an attorney..
3) If I request for Diversion and complete it successfully, will my record stay clean?
4) Is there a certain way I should dress for court or anything..?
5) Can the store charge me for the item I damaged?

What is my best possible option and what are the steps I should take to prevent this from staying on my record??

The way most Diversion programs work you will have no conviction upon successful completeion of program

Shirt and tie
5) Can the store charge me for the item I damaged?
Yes its unsaleable

Talk to your Attorney but Diversion is likely going to get you what you want
