My grandfather passed away in Nov of 09 in Puerto Rico. Prior to his passing my mom and her family (stepmom, step sister, etc.) were not on the best terms and my grandfather was not doing to well to know what was going on. The family seemed to be preparing for the worse and all the family issues had to do with his belongings (will, etc..) Before his passing, my mom's stepmom & family made it clear that his children (my mom & my uncles) werent entitled to anything at all and that it would go to his current wife and her children. My mom stayed away to avoid problems, therefore she was not in touch with the family since his passing. It seems now that they are trying to sell his home in P.R. but cannot do so without my mom's information (birth certificate and Social security number). I am having a difficult time allowing my mom to provide this information to them. Is there a reason why they need my mom's information? If so, why? Also, with all the headaches and issues with the family, is there a safe way to go about this? Who should we speak to or whom should be contacting my mom? the family or a lawyer? Possibly their lawyer? I am soo sorry but I do not trust the family after all they have put my mom through and refuse to allow her to just pass off her information just like that....

thank you in advance.

First of all, I am sorry to hear of your loss.

Your mother doesn't have to do anything.

No court will order her to produce those documents.

We only have to respond to legal process via court orders (subpoeanas, summons, etc...)

You mother should just continue to ignore them.

In fact, watching these abusive thieves twist and turn on their evil deeds, should offer your family some sort of solace.

Don't assist these thieves in their scam.

Do respond only to court orders.

Otherwise, let the crooks do their own heavy lifting.
