I had a 3 year membership at G...'s Gym with monthly payments deducted from my checking account. I received a letter stating that due to "tough economic times" G...'s Gym would be closing on December 12, 2008. I checked my recent bank statement and found that I was still being billed for a monthly gym membership to another gym. I contacted them and they stated they had purchased the contracts from G...'s Gym and to cancel this membership I had to pay them one final month and give them a thirty day notice? It was my belief that when G...'s Gym closed my contract ended. Am I liable to pay another gym I have never been in and have to pay to cancel a "membership" I never signed up for with their gym?

I would not be surprised to learn that your right to cancel is governed by the contract and requires you to give certain notice, and that G's Gym had the right to assign the contract to a third party. The only way to find out for sure is to go to court. I'd stop the payments. If they want to collect, they can sue you and try to explain to a judge why you should be liable. Maybe they win, maybe they don't.
