My last job was with a tax preparation company. I left that job last year after my mom died. The other day two US Treasury agents showed up at my house and accused me of creating a false tax return on a co-worker. They are saying that I upped her income so she would owe over $400,000 to the IRS. They are also saying that they got a sample of my handwriting from my last job and compared it to the fake signatures on the return and it was over a ninety percent match! They are saying I must have done it out of revenge, or as a practical joke. I did not do this. How can this be true?
They are saying that theywill now submit their finding to the feds to see if they will prosecute me. If the feds don't pick it up they will send it to the local government. They also said if I don't hear anything in 30 days don't worry about it.
They are telling me that the co-worker has resolved her case with the IRS. They say i may be charged with tax fraud, forgery or Identity theft.
Can they arrest someone on handwriting comparison? I know I am innocent. I have never commited a crime before or ever. Are they just scaring me or can I really be arrested with the evidence they feel they have.
They seemed to be interested that I was no longer doing taxes and now have a marketing job. Oh and they also tried to get me to pin it on another coworker.
