My daughter signed up for band & after being in it a few weeks (maybe 4) I made the decision my daughter was not going to continue with band class due to her not being responsible with such an expanse instrument & I didn't want to have to pay $1,100.00 to replace it. My daughters band teacher on several different occasions keeps stopping her in the hall way & with an attitude the teacher tells my daughter she can NOT quit band & if she does will get an F & fail. Today she told my daughter the same thing but also told her that if she quits she's not going to make honor roll because she will get an F & right now my daughter has all A'S & one B the teacher made my daughter a few minutes late to class. This is my daughters first year in the junior high & it is really upsetting her.Is there anything I can do legally?

Yes. Allow your daughter to honor her committments.

Oh, you mean is there some way you can force the school to allow her to quit band without it affecting her record? No.

You need to go to the school and see about getting her transferred into another class. The teacher has no say in the matter. The longer she stays in the class the harder it is move her. It sounds like she is a good student so a late start in another class shouldn't be too hard on her. Otherwise keep her in the class until the end of the current grading period.

This is very easy to solve, mom.

You can discuss class options with your daughter's counselor.

Do NOT withdraw her until the end of the marking period or semester.

She seems to be doing well, so you might wish to consider her finishing the entire year.

A chat with your child about responsibility and taking good care of the instrument could be very productive.

You can get an insurance policy to cover her should something happen to the instrument.

Ultimately, your word is law.

So, be very careful in allowing her to manipulate your decision.

A good compromise might be transferring her to chorus or a vocal activity.

Music will help her to be a better, more well rounded adult.
