I've been approched by Mount Hope Cemetary in NY to give them the ok to bury the last two persons in the lot. I never heard that I am an heir to the gravesite but i gave them permission. Now they are asking me to maintain the site and create an endowment for the care of the graves. I have no interest in the graves and want to know what to do about it. I live in Charlotte NC and want to make sure they don't file a lien against my property. My grandfather, grandmother and Uncle were buried there and two cousins, one buried in 2009 and his wife with alzheimers disease, when she dies. My uncle did an endowment in 1986 and has since died but the cemetary says that it is now not enough money.
I did not receive any money in their will to pay for anything that regards them.

Do you have the original contract for the purchase of the gravesite, and the paperwork for the first endowment? I'm curious to know why the cemetary thinks they are entitled to continue to ask for endowment money to care for the sites.

If in fact they ARE entitled to keep asking for money, then you can probably tell them you're not interested in maintaining the site. It will just molder, or perhaps there's a clause allowing the cemetery to exhume the bodies and dispose of them some other way. Either way, I can't imagine you'll be on the hook indefinitely. Look at the contracts.

I just found out that i was an heir in succession so I did not know anything about the grave site or cemetery. I guess my Grandfather purchased the site and his son made an endowment of $825 back in 1986. They all have died. I never saw any contracts or endowment and did not ask the cemtery for them. I would just forward the current bill to my cousin whose father was just buried there in July.
Thank you very much for your reply as it makes it easier for me to deal with this situation.
