I am a NY resident and today I was caught shoplifting $87 worth of items from a major dept store. Unfortunately, shoplifting has become an everyday part of my life and it took for something like this to happen for me to realize that I have a problem. I am 21 years old and have one child who need me, this is a devastating issue and I am asking for you deepest understanding in helping me resolve this, the right way! I am trying to have this case dismissed because I am a college student, trying to make a good life for myself and my child and cannot afford for this to be on my record. I was taken to the LP's office after being caught and signed a paper, in which I'm not even sure what it stated due to being so nervous and in shock at the time. The police were later called, I was handcuffed, sent to the precinct, and waited a few hours before I was finally released. I was given a desk appearance ticket for the 24th of June. The officer stated that I will more than likely pay a fine at the front desk that morning, and not even see a judge. I am still confused as to how simple he made this seem, and he kept insisting that this "wasn't a big deal" and that he was going to help me "beat this" I know you are not a lawyer, but I figured knowing the entire situation would help you better assist me as to whether or not I have a chance at dropping this on the 24th of June. Again, I am hoping to have this dismissed. I know its not that easy, but I will do anything possible. My son doesn't deserve this and I am all he has. I am broken over my choices and hope that I truly remember this experience and never do this again. Please let me know what you recommend at this point. Thank you!

Walking in a paying a fine is likely the same a guilty plea and not recommended. It would mean a criminal conviction and criminal record if I am correct. Start calling Lawyers (many offer free consultations) get as many as you can. Ask these lawyers about Diversion as possible option.

Now you state you feel you may have a shoplifting problem. There are places that can help with that and might help you in court as well such as an antishoplifting course.
