i have a friend who recently stole a less than $50 in store name market just this september...and the security company is charging him $500!!!! mY goodness gracious.. where in the world will he get that. He is seriously broke and doesnt have money.

The letter he received from the security company (name removed) gave him 10days or else that's going to be on his records. We have been trying to call them everyday and they are not calling back.

We wanted to discuss with them "alternative payment options" like for example, every week he pays this certain amount...

Pls. help us! His last 10days-grace-period is today..

and CAN the antishoplifting class help him? How about community service...

We even gave a letter to the manager in store name market saying he can do any responsibility around the area without any pay for atleast 2 weeks or so... i do hope it works...

The money requested is called Civil Demand its legal and yes $500.00 sounds about right. His best action is to keep calling. If he cannot reach them by phone he should send in his puposed payment plan with a hefty deposit (say $100.00). Keep copies of this letter and payment. Since this is a Civil issue there is no court to deal with unless this compnay sues him for the monies and if that happens the cost can reach into thousands! The course you ask about will help with any criminal charges he might have to deal with. Be sure he states how often and when he tried to call to make payment plan in letter. The issue is out of stores hands now.

Side note for your protection both the store name and name of company seeking Civil Demand were removed

Maybe he should have though about that before stealing from the store. See shoplifters only thing of "I can get this for free" they don't think "If I get caught, X will happen" You say its not fair for them to charge him $500 Civil Demand, do you think it was fair for your friend to steal from the store?

If he and others didn't steal, the store wouldn't have to hire security and seve themselves tens of thousands of dollars every year, they wouldn't lose money to shoplifters and everyone would be happy.

Tell him to make payment arrangements.

It won't work, why would the store want a thief working for them?

I get offered this "deal" all the time.
Shoplifter: "Please, can I work here to pay off my debt?"
Me: "Yeah, that would be great! I want a thief working here I have to watch non-stop for 8 hours a day!"

Let me throw some numbers at you. My personal research shows that average LP department payroll is about $100,00.00 per year. This does not include cameras systems etc a LP team often has. If you go to NASP website you will see other data such as

Retailers lose over 13 billion a year to shoplifting
The average shoplifter is caught once out of every 48 or 49 attempts
The average shoplift is about $100.00

Theres more visit the NASP website you can find the data there. Bottom line that $500.00 barely puts a dent in the cost so any funds a retailer can recoup are a plus and can help prevent the many downsides to this lost. Here is brief list

. Consumers forced to pay higher prices
. Retail employees laid off or have hours reduced
. Decreased benefits for said employers
. More inconviences to shoppers (who dont steal) due to added security measures. Like the hated door checkers
