I am getting a divorce and my wife has told me that if I lie and say that I mentally abused her during the marriage that the state of Il will grant us a divorce in 45 days instead of the normal six months wait. I would like to expediate the divorce but, I do not want to admit to abuse that did not occur. Is this true? And if so is there anything else that we can say to expediate the process besides abuse? Help please I am so worrried that this will affect my relationship with my children?

Well, you could admit to habitually abusing drugs, or admit to adultery, or you could even commit a felony. How about admitting that you are impotent, and have been throughout your marriage. These are grounds for divorce, as is extreme and repeated mental cruelty. Whether or not you can get a divorce in 45 days with any of these grounds is questionable.

More importantly, do you really want to be held responsible for the end of your marriage for something you didn't do? If you lie in court to say that you mentally abused your wife, then that will be forever recorded in court documents.

Can't you wait 6 months? The 2 year separation requirement for irreconcilable differences may be waived in IL if you agree on the terms of the divorce and both agree that your marriage cannot be saved.
