My X girlfriend who was hauled off to Jail for a few months for numerous things such as hit & run, not showing up to court dates, writing fraudulent checks, is trying to take the dog we sort of bought together.

I paid the breeder $180 cash when we picked the dog up, and my X paid the difference of $270 by check (which bounced).

After her release (she is on bail) I questioned her about payment and she said she took care of it and paid the breeder. After calling the breeder, she told me that the check bounced, and she tried numerous times to contact her for payment. At this point I went and paid the balance in cash as I want to keep the dog.

She paid the initial vet bills of getting all of the shots done, however, she wrote checks which also bounced so technically she has not paid for those either.

I have the receipt for payment which states that it is the remaining balance for a check that was bounced by X-GF.

Now my X is threatening to pursue court action against me as she is the legal owner of the dog and she states that she has evidence. She is also telling me that she is going to have the police come and get the dog because I have committed theft.

I have receipt showing payment for the dog, and have been taking care of it completely for he last 2.5 months or so in addition to being around it every day since we picked him up. (we lived together for a short while...)

She wrote me an email yesterday stating that I have 24 hours to give her the dog or she will pursue action and she CC'd this letter to an attorney.

Advice would be greatly appreciated!

You can write her back (CC her attorney) and tell her that you will see her in Small Claims Court (make sure you have all the back ups showing you made all the payments when it comes to the purchase of the dog and back ups for any additional items you got on behalf of the dog.) Good Luck!
