I bought some items from work that I really couldn't afford... I ended up returning them on the register without the items. The total was about 180. I got let go the other day and re-embursed the company but they said they were going to press charges and file a police report. I don't know what to do... I'm in California. Any help/advice would help. Thanks!

You are facing criminal charges and criminal record you need to talkto a Lawyer about your options. Its possible they might even charge you with embezellment! You might also enroll in an Anti Shoplifting class before court. This shows your being proactive. That is always a good thing. If your interested send me a Pm I will give you info for such a course

You need to get ahead of the ball here. Talk to no one except a lawyer. Often, the company will file a police report and the police will come and try and get you to talk to them. That is a big mistake. You have the right to remain silent and the right to counsel. They will try and intimidate you into confessing to them and writing a statement for them. Do neither. Let your attorney speak for you as they know how to best defend you in this situation.

Thank you so much for the advice. Just some more info- I already told LP what happened... I didn't know they were going to press charges. I also reimbursed the total amounts of the merchandise. Also, I tried doing some consultations with some criminal defense lawyers but I am a full-time student and that was my full-time job as well. Do you know what I'm looking at? =( I don't have any prior records or anything. I just don't know what to do at this point.

You were told what to do consult an Attorney. That will be your "best" source on info. Now we can speculate but we need to know penal code your charged with first. Also without knowing the state we cant even guess!

I'm in California. I have consulted with a few attorneys but I am just not able to hire them. They mentioned I would get a public defender but I am unsure about this whole situation. How long does the investigation usually take before a police officer would try and get in touch with me.
