Six months ago I meet a person who has a shop. I started sub leasing a part of their shop. Yesterday I found a letter in office from the city that said no shop business license on file. This is a week after a fire Marshall inspecter came out to inspect all the shops in the area.

Now owner says he is closing doors and leaving this week.

He never had paper lease either.

Am I liable for any issues he has caused with the city?

Do I pack up my stuff and leave.

Or can I contact to landlord and take over the building to run my own shop? And do the right thing and file my own paperwork for a business and get paper lease?

You are free to ask the landlord if you can lease whatever interests you.

Depending upon the response, your next steps should be to continue to vacate the premises.

If you stay, without a proper lease, you'll have bigger problems.

Even with a lease, you might still be in violation of some city ordinance. Make sure you can stay legally, otherwise it's best to get out.

Thanks for the outlook.

I tday took everything I owned. And got it out of the building and put it into storage.

Still in contact with other guy and will give shop key back. Going to type up letter and make two copies and make him sign mine. And give him a copy. Laying out I was sub leasing and when I came in and when I left.

If he doesn't sign, that is fine. Will be recording it with video and sound. And inform him he is being recorded. His answers and body language will be enough if it goes to court.
