Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft HElP!!

I got caught shoplifting merchendise under 10 dollars the other day. They took me into the back room, took my id and information and ssn. They didn't call the police, so does that mean that no criminal charges will be pressed and it won't be on my record? They said that I will be recieving a letter in the mail to pay for restitution and I have no idea what that means!! Will I have to go to court? HELP!

Also, I thought that shoplifting was passing the point of pay, like outside the door, but I was still shopping when I was approached. Were they allowed to do that?

In some states concealment alone is a crime. The fine they mention is called Civil Demand expect that letter to come soon pay it right away. Yes they can file criminal charges but thats unlikely at this point. The only record will be within the store and any retail theft database they might belong to
