Hello,
My sister has decided to divorce her husband. Early next week my brother and father and I are going to her apartment to retrieve her belongings while her husband is at work. For the wedding two years ago people gave them around $15K-$20K USD. We are not sure where the money is since her husband has dual citizenship with New Zealand. But according to my sister all the money is in her husband and mother in law's name. We tend to believe the money is off shore and inaccessible to my sister, so we are not pursuing it. We are however trying to look out for my sister's best interests and part of that is to help her get as much property out of the situation. My father suggested that she take their car and get the locks changed under the rationale that my sister is entitled to half of the car and that is her best chance of getting something out of the situation since there is a good chance she will not be getting any of the money she is entitled to. However, the car was purchased by her husband before they were married and the vehicle is in his name. For that reason alone my sister does not want to "steal" the car. It's a tricky situation in and of itself, but more so since the stakes are so small. I'm not so much interested in an answer to this problem as I am in just having a way of thinking about it. Any advice anyone can provide would be helpful. Thanks!
