How can I be declared independent to help pay for college?

Hi,

I will be turning 20 in a week and would like to find a way to become "independent," so my parent's income does not count against me for financial aid. My parents are not paying for my education, but their income is counted and puts me out of reach for any need-based aid. (It just doesn't seem fair). Anyway, currently my parents and I are residents of VA. I go to school in Philadelphia, though. I rent a house up there and also have a part-time job. If I were to declare myself a PA resident, would I be able to become independent (by government standards) to get more financial aid? If not, how can I be declared as an independent to receive more aid?

Thanks.
Liz

Many students do not qualify for fianancial aid that is in the exact same position that you are in. That is just the way it is. You'll have to apply for grants, scholarships, or work a job to pay for college if you do not qualify for fincial aid.
