How do I break a two year lease with one year to go?

Please advise me on the best way to ask the landlord to end my two year lease that still has one year to go.
The apartment is in Manhattan in New York city. The rent is too high for me now and I must move out.
I have asked the landlord to renegotiate the rent and they did not accept.
What is the best way for me to end the lease early?

Have you discussed whether you can find someone to sublet the apartment?

You cannot get out of your lease just because of a financial hardship. I agree either subletting or helping the landlord find a new tenant is probably the way to go. Is a roommate an option at all or is the place too small?
