My son has been living in my basement for 10 years. He has pretty much had it rent free for this time. My wife and I did not mind doing this as he has 2 children, 10 and 7 and we were more worried about him supporting them than paying rent. (They do not live with him but with their mother.) He has been a drug user for all of this time. We have warned him numerous times that he cannot live with us and use drugs. He has made attempts at "cleaning up his act" but has not been successful. We have reached the point that we can no longer help to "enable" his habit by providing a rent-free environment. We have asked him to leave and he has not done so. What is the process I need to use to have him evicted? I live in the state of Maryland.

You need to google landord tenant laws in your state, or eviction procedures. If I were you, start with a 30 day notice. Slap it on his door and tell him he has 30 days to move out. You sure have toleratd this for a long time, I would have kicked him out a long time ago.

You might have to eventually file an eviction notice in court to get him out. Here is a webiste that covers alot of info for maryland:

You also might want to start charging him rent on day 31 if he is not out, like rent starts accumulating at 50.00 per day.

Good luck
