Consumer Law, Warranties how do I get out of a fittness contarct

My jurisdiction is: Haywood co. North carolina

I became a member of a small private owned fittness center in Oct 07 then many things went wrong [car broke down, lost my job, have family problems etc.] and I havent been able to go scence feb 08 I am still paying the membership until oct 09. I am running out of money for this.
I ask the bank how do I cancel the auto payment and they said only the fitness center can do that.

1. how do I get out of the contract I cant keep paying any more.

You can close your account but a financial hardship is not a defense to cancel membership. They can still try and get a judgement against you for the balance. Have you tried talking to the gym?
