I live in Dallas, GA in Paulding County. I was married on 8/16/2008. My husband planned on changing his last name to a family name legally and we hoped that this would take place before the wedding for the new name to be on the marriage license. Unfortunately, his court date was 8/27/2008 and the legal name change was approved after the marriage. The marriage license states his old last name and my maiden name. I have not changed my name yet but, would like to change it to his new legal last name. I don't know how to go about doing so. Do I need to get a legal name change as well or could I present my marriage license with his legal name change document as proof to change my name? Would I be able to get the name change on the marriage license? I'm not sure what steps to take. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Meredith

You're most likely going to have to file for a name change through the court.

Husband changes his last name after marriage

Hi Meredith,

I am in the same boat that you are in. I just got off the phone with the Social Security Office and they said that after your husband's name change is legally all said and done, you need to go and get your marriage license ammended to where it shows his new last name. Once you do that, then you can go and change your last name just like you would if he had never changed his name at all.
