I was recently fired from my job after i caught my manger deleting hours that i had worked and confronted him about them. At the time he said he didnt know what had happened but i already had the proof that he deleted them. A week later i was at work getting ready to start cleaning the store when he came in and immediatly started to write me up for things that i didnt even know i was doing wrong to begin with ,and that he allowed every other employee to do but NEVER said anything to them. He told me that he tried to give me a chance and that he was letting me go. At first i didnt understand why he was firing me when we were joking around with each other the day before and everything seemed fine, it wasnt until i came to get my final check and the girls that i had worked with told me that he said he did it because i was looking at the times. Which means he was retaliating against me for speaking up about him doing something wrong. I know in florida there is an "at will" agreement and he can fire me for whatever but what about retaliation laws? does anyone think they apply here? or violation of public policy? any help would be great i went to a lawyer but he said there wasnt anything i could do except get money for the hours that were deleted and the mandatory meetings every week that i wasnt getting paid for. ????

"Retaliation" against whistleblowing generally applies only when you report a violation of law to the appropriate regulatory agency which, in this case would have been the federal Dept of Labor for failure to pay for all hours worked. It does not normally apply to internal complaints. That's why the attorney meant said there was nothing you could do except get the wages that you were not paid.

Have you filed for unemployment benefits?
