I drove my girlfriends car

Four years ago while driving my girlfriends car I was involved in an accident, the officer at the hospital asked if I would like to pursue the issue further becuase he was obviously at fault. I made the mistake of making a friendly agreement with the man to live and let live everyone was fine so I pushed the issue no further. Recently I recieved papers indicating that I was bieng sued, 1) the paperwork was sent to my mothers house that I have moved out of 6 years ago. 2) I just recieved it yesterday and there is a threat of defualt judgement if not responded to in the next 5 days. The threat was a defualt of judgement of 25,000 dollars? I have no assests and little money to pay a lawyer what should I do? Also they threatened my girlfriend with a lawsuit, neither of us can afford a lawyer and we have little time what should or could we do?
