I have a question concerning application fees

I applied for an apartment and paid the application fee. The place has been rented out. I have an email from the company stating that they did not my application. Can I get my money back? From what I have read, those fees are not to be pocketed and can only be used to cover the costs of a background and credit check.

Why not ask them? But, emails aren't necessarily proof.

How did you pay them?
If by cash, do you have a receipt? If no receipt, you are likely out of luck unless some honest person remembers and admits having taken your payment.
If by check or credit simply show them proof of the transaction and you should get a quick refund.

What do you mean when your wrote "I have an email from the company stating they did not my application"? Did not run your credit check? Did not accept your application?
